Space-time monitoring of water quality in an eutrophic reservoir using SENTINEL-2 data - A case study of San Roque, Argentina

Eutrophic reservoirs are characterized by excessive presence of plant and algal growth due to favourable environmental conditions, temperature, light nutrients. Human activities accelerate this phenomenon provoke dramatic changes the aquatic ecosystems. The monitoring water quality these ecosystems study effects they have on environment demand a large amount spatial temporal information, which is almost exclusively provided Earth Observations (EO). This uses series Sentinel-2 (S2; 2016 till 2019) images characterize distribution chlorophyll-a [Chl-a] in San Roque Reservoir, Cordoba Province, Argentina. A robust method that combines empirical modelling data mining analysis employed. Model results showed significant fit (R2 = 0.77) between measured reservoir ratio NIR red bands S2. An spatio-temporal patterns demonstrated complex influenced seasonal changes, aeolian forces, hydrodynamic flows, bathymetry, levels, pollution sources. also found correlation algae bloom events areas with extreme levels (>850 mg/m3) body. Additionally, advanced tools such as slope anomalies indexes, identified regions where had improved or deteriorated. show added value using assess concentration Chlorophyll-a eutrophic over variety scales.
